Car Insurance: Third-Party vs. Comprehensive

When buying car insurance, the terms “Third-Party” and “Comprehensive” often come up. But what do they really mean? Understanding the difference is crucial to choosing the right protection for you and your vehicle. Let’s break it down.

What is Third-Party Liability Insurance?

Think of this as the legal minimum. In Hong Kong, it’s mandatory to have Third-Party Liability insurance to drive on any road. Its main purpose is to cover your legal responsibility for any damage or injury you cause to *other people* (the “third party”) in an accident.

  • It Covers: Injury or death to third parties, and damage to third-party property (like their car or a storefront).
  • It Does NOT Cover: Any damage to your own car or your own medical expenses. You would have to pay for these costs yourself.

What is Comprehensive Insurance?

Comprehensive insurance is a significant upgrade. It includes all the protection of a Third-Party policy, and crucially, it also covers your own vehicle.

  • It Covers: Everything in a Third-Party policy, PLUS damage to your own car from an accident, fire, or theft.
  • Additional Benefits: Many comprehensive plans also offer extra benefits like windscreen protection, medical expense coverage, and roadside assistance for complete peace of mind.

What is a “Deductible” (Excess)?

A deductible (also known as “excess” or “自負額”) is a fixed amount you must pay out-of-pocket when you make a claim, before the insurance company pays the rest.

Example: If your claim is for $20,000 and your policy has a $5,000 deductible, you pay the first $5,000, and the insurer covers the remaining $15,000.

Always check the deductible amount when comparing policies—a lower premium might sometimes come with a higher deductible.
